Create the Design of the Bookmark
Okay, guys, first you're going to take the markers and make a design in the depression area (on the side) of your Spacemaker pencil box or crayon box - whatever you want to call it. I've already chosen a design: I did polka dots with my blue marker. The markers are from Crayola. You can use any Crayola marker, I think you can use dry-erase markers, but I'm not really sure about permanent markers.
Spread the Glue for the Bookmark
Once you do your design, you're going to take glue - I'm using Elmer's School Glue - and you're going to fill the depression with it. It's okay if the glue gets out. It doesn't really matter, because it'll end up peeling off when it dries, anyway. Since you're going to be filling the depressed area, it might take a lot of glue. But, I think it's kind of worth it, because you don't have to go buy a bookmark; you can just use glue and markers. I mean, who doesn't have markers and glue in their house? You should be able to see the blue dots coming out (1:41). To make a bookmark out of glue this way doesn't take just 5 minutes (or so); you have to wait for the glue to dry. So it will take a day, depending on when you put it on. You'll want to make sure that the depression is all filled in, and that there are no dents in the glue surface, i.e., no places without glue. The surface you have should end up looking smooth, like that (2:31).
Wait for the Glue in the Bookmark to Dry
After a few hours, you'll start seeing color leaving the glue and you should see the little blue dots. (Though the dots looks green, they're actually blue...) You're going to have to wait for the glue to dry. Make sure the Spacemaker pencil box is left in a cool place, so that the glue dries faster. Don't put it in the sun or anything like that, because that's not going to help. If it's cold at night, I recommend that you put it outside. I'll just check on it later...
Six hours in, the colored dots are finally starting to show. The bookmark is just going to be like this, white with blue polka dots. The edges and the corners are starting to dry, as you can see (3:28). The reason the bookmark takes so long to dry is because there's so much glue in it. Mine is taking forever to dry because where I live (the weather) is super hot, and the glue is not cooling very well. I'll keep you guys tuned in, and check back the next day...
Now the glue's had time to dry and fuse. You can touch on the dry parts when you can start seeing the color of your Spacemaker pencil box through the clear glue, but not on the white parts. It's been some hours (since the last check-in), probably about 7, I'm not sure. We still need a lot more time for the glue to dry. It's doing pretty well considering it's very hot where I live...Two hours later, the glue's lost some more of the white color. You can see that most of it is hard and dry (4:54). Let's wait another 2 hours...
Here's Your Rubber Bookmark...
Okay, it's completely done, and now we can start peeling it off of the Spacemaker pencil box. In any corner where the glue flowed (slightly) out of the depression, you can start peeling it from there...Ta da! A new bookmark! That is your finished product (6:22)...I forgot to tell you that there are no blue markings left behind on the pencil box, and there isn't any glue either. If you didn't peel it off right, there might be a little bit of glue left. Check you guys later!
